Show me the Aid money

Last week, my friend -with whom I have shared countless dev debates when we were studying for our masters and long after- was in the field with his NGO. He visited villages in Luxor where the children have never met a foreigner before and kept on following him.

It reminded me of the movie Bienvenido Mister Marshall. Set in a Spanish village post World War II, at the time of the Marshall Plan for the reconstruction of Western Europe, the movie introduces us to the mayor and people who heard rumors that the train on which Mr Marshall is travelling will pass by their village. They go overboard, disguising their non-Andalusian town in an Andalusian polka-dot frilly gown, for Mr Marshall to be impressed by everything Spanish and make a hefty donation.

Years after, an Egyptian movie, زيارة السيد الرئيس (The President's Visit) takes us to a village where all are waiting for the Egyptian and American President (Clinton at the time), having heard rumors that the train will stop by. People fight about who's more worthy of the aid money, and then synergize to paint their village blue, red and white with stars and anglicize the shop signs. For we Egyptians are proud of our heritage...

disregard of local traditions and beliefs

Social Marketing

my most recent obsession, something that would combine my passion for change and my artistic side, something that would mobilize the masses with no need for proposals, failed projects and the continuous masking of that (and we can drop the jargon while we're at it)

here are a few of my favorite campaigns:
The Story of Stuff by Annie Leonard
Animals Save the Planet, by Animal Planet
UNHCR "spot the odd one out" poster, the poster that got me thinking about it all 3 years ago in Geneva.
Supersize-me, on fast food.

So the alternative is not so good after all

Was thinking today if it wouldn't be better to go work in the business sector...
the Economist tells me it isn't much better of an alternative

On Women

Feminist quotes, inspired by my recent participation in a 30 day training developing leadership skills for women working in the development field (and this I have yet to tell you about).

“Man is defined as a human being and a woman as a female — whenever she behaves as a human being she is said to imitate the male.” - Simone de Beauvoir

“Women have been taught that, for us, the earth is flat, and that if we venture out, we will fall off the edge.” -Author Unknown

“Some of us are becoming the men we wanted to marry.” - Gloria Steinem

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are people.“ -Cheris Kramarae and Paula Treichler
